Interviewing 101

The Phone Interview

Congratulations! You’ve scored your first interview with a hiring manager for that perfect position to which you applied! Typically, the first interview will be over the phone. The hiring manager will take some time to talk about the position, and then they’ll ask you about your experience, and what you are looking for in your next position. How can you prepare? What can you do to show that you are the best candidate for this position? Here are a few tips!

One: Prepare
Take a few minutes and re-read the job description prior to the interview, and then take some notes. These notes could be made of questions that you would like to ask the manager, or reasons why your experience would make you a good fit.

Two: Ready for the Call
Are you ready for the phone call? Make sure you are available at the time of the call. Set a reminder for yourself, so you can go to a quiet place, if necessary. The last thing a hiring manager wants to hear is “Hold on a second,” or, “Can I put you on hold?”

Three: Paying Attention
Listen to what the manager is saying, and asking. Take notes during the conversation and don’t be afraid to ask for clarification.

Four: Ask Questions
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! The interviewer wants to know that you have a genuine interest in this position.

Five: Passionate and Experienced
Know why you are, and should be, the number one candidate to be considered! Do you know why you want this job? Why are you passionate about what you do? Why does your experience and education make you the person that should be hired?

Six: The Wrap Up
The conversation is ending, and the manager has just asked you if you have any other questions. And you don’t. All the questions you had about the position have been answered. Here are two solid questions that will continue to convey that you are interested, and that you are engaged in the process. “What is the next step?”, “Do you have any questions for me, to help clarify my experience?”

Convey the passion that you have for what you do by being enthusiastic! Combined with the experience you have, your enthusiasm, and your personable professionalism will help propel you to the front of the line!
